Recently, biotech company LanzaTech revealed the process behind its partnership with Inditex’s Zara to produce recycled carbon emission capsules.
The designs involve incorporating fabrics made from carbon emissions, helping retailers avoid passing these emissions into the atmosphere by using LanzaTech’s CarbonSmart technology.
We are very excited about our partnership with Inditex and Zara, which brings fashion made from waste carbon emissions to the marketplace,” said Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech. “LanzaTech has the technology to help fashion brands and retailers limit their carbon impact, and by working with Zara, we’ve found a new way to recycle carbon emissions into fabrics.”
The company’s process involves collecting and converting steel mill emissions, cutting off their transport to the atmosphere. After the emissions are recycled into ethanol, they are then converted into low-carbon materials and finally recast into low-carbon polyester yarns, and the resulting yarns are used to make Zara’s capsule collection of party dresses.
LanzaTech’s input comes from its ability to convert different raw materials, including household waste, into ethanol through a fermentation process using waste carbon.
The company has also previously worked with Lululemon to develop recycled carbon yarns, and the sportswear brand supports the development process behind the innovation.
