In order to meet consumers’ demand for transparency in the textile supply chain, Oeko-Tex ®, the world’s most authoritative and influential eco-textile certification association, has updated its certification standards, label audit methods, limit changes and label application scope for its various certification systems.

The following is the Oeko-Tex ® Certification Label Update for 2021:

1. Including recycled materials in Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex ® certification system:

Oeko-Tex ® has decided to include recycled materials in the Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex ® certification system due to the increasing demand for the use of recycled materials in the manufacture of fashion and textile products in an era of climate change and dwindling textile raw materials.

From this year, 100 by OEKO – TEX ® certification STANDARD system specifies the minimum content of recycled materials in the products, but as a result of recycled materials compared with the original material is more difficult to certification, because the former is used on the consumes part of the life cycle, STANDARD 100 by OEKO – TEX ® certification system will be according to different sources of renewable materials, formulate the corresponding certification standards, and will be mentioned on the certification issued by the tag, to help consumers better understand the importance of recycling in circular economy.

2.Include chrome – and metal-free tanned LEATHER in the Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex ® label certification system:

Tanning leather shall be tested for metal content limits and the results shall be indicated on the certificate.

3. Integrate carbon footprint and water footprint into Made IN Green by Oeko-Tex ® label certification system:

By scanning the “Made IN Green” label, consumers can find out which innovative technology has been used to reduce environmental pollution.

New virtualization audit:

Due to the outbreak, the Oeko-Tex ® audit team will not be able to conduct on-site audits, so the STANDARD 100 by Oeko-Tex ®, Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex ®, STEP and Eco Passport tags will be reviewed via online virtualization.

5. Updated limits for PFAs (perfluorinated/polyfluorinated alkyl compounds) in products:

PFAs are industrial chemicals used primarily in the coatings of textiles, such as outerwear. In line with the latest EU risk assessment criteria, Oeko-Ttex ® has changed the limits for PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and its salt substances, added titanium dioxide (TiO2) to the CAS number screening of inhalable particle size in the Eco Passport by Oeko-Ttex ®, and further limited sulfur dioxide emissions from solid and liquid dyes.

6. New list of “tested substances” :

In 2021, Oeko-Ttex ® will test a number of new substances based on the latest scientific findings and compliance standards, including diisocyanate (which can trigger allergic reactions through skin contact and inhalation), the compounds dibutyldiisooctanoate (acetylacetone), 2-methylimidazole and 1-ethylimidazole.

The latest version of the certification standards will take effect on April 1, 2021.
